The DfE released guidance for school uniform updated July 2026 which can be found here and also released statutory guidance on the cost of school uniform which can be found here.

This guidance asks schools to ensure:

School uniform should help to build a sense of identity and community among pupils and with their school. To do this, it must be affordable. Affordability should never be a barrier to the schools for which parents apply or the activities in which children can participate.
Schools should engage with parents and pupils when they are developing their uniform policy.
All branded items should be kept to a minimum.
Schools must limit the number of compulsory branded items of uniform and PE kit to 3 or fewer.
From September 2026: A school’s uniform policy should be: published on its website, available for all parents, including parents of prospective pupils, easily understood, including clearly setting out which items are compulsory and which are optional
Schools should ensure that their uniform supply arrangements give the highest priority to cost and value for money, including to an item’s quality, durability and sustainability.

Schools should ensure that opportunities to acquire second-hand uniforms are freely accessible to all parents. Information on second-hand uniforms should be clear and available to parents of both current and prospective pupils and be published on the school’s website.
Schools do not need to require branded items to control details such as colour, shade, fabric or fit. They can set and enforce rules for generic uniform items.
As soon as practically possible, and in time for parents to purchase uniform required for September 2027 at the latest, schools should:
- consider whether the total cost of their uniform might deter parents, if their household is on low income, from applying to the school
- consider the cost of individual items, and the total cost of all required items of uniform, to ensure uniform is affordable for parents - no individual item should be unnecessarily high cost
- take steps to minimise the cost to parents of compulsory items, especially those that are typically higher cost, such as blazers and jumpers.

Parents are encouraged to speak to school if they have any issues with purchasing uniform. We hold good quality, second hand uniform sales throughout the year with a pay what you are able to price. These items are available to purchase throughout the year if anybody requires uniform. Please contact the office.

For boys, the uniform is:

Black shoes and grey or black socks
Grey trousers
White button-up collared shirt (long or short-sleeved)
School navy blue jumper with logo
School tie (elasticated version for KS1 and self-tie
version for KS2)

For girls, the uniform is:

Black shoes
White socks or grey tights
Grey skirt/trousers including grey shorts/pinafore (blue gingham dresses/playsuits may be worn after Easter. Girls can wear navy sport briefs under their summer dresses if required.)
White button-up collared shirt (long or short-sleeved)
School navy blue jumper or cardigan with logo
School tie (elasticated version for KS1 and self-tie version for KS2)

P.E. kit for both boys and girls:

Trainers
Royal blue shorts
School white t-shirt with logo

Games kit

Trainers
Plain navy or black jogging bottoms
Navy or black hoodie (outdoor). Hoodies with logos are available but not compulsory.

Children may not wear cycling shorts under summer dresses. Girls can wear navy sport briefs under their summer dresses if required but these are not compulsory.
Children may not wear jewellery to school. Anyone with pierced ears should wear one pair of studs during school time.
Make-up or nail varnish is not allowed in school.
Long hair should be tied back with either a discreet headband or clips. These should be of a single colour, blue or white, to complement the school uniform.
Extreme haircuts, hairstyles and hair dye are not allowed.
Jumpers and cardigans must have the school logo on.
Children attending St Mary's will be expected to comply with the above guidance.

The Governing Body has a right to determine the school uniform. The Headteacher is charged with enforcement; through the wearing of a standardised uniform brings a sense of pride in the school, self-esteem, personal discipline and personal independence.
